Academy Update

The U6 boys hit for Bohadoon recently where they enjoyed a football blitz where they had great craic playing the Brickeys, St. Olivers and St. Pats. This was their second outing in as many weeks having played in Kilmacthomas earlier this month. It’s excellent to see our youngest members taking to the field to represent the club, playing games and having is what it’s all about!

U8

The U8 hurlers descended upon Carriganore to take part in a blitz organized be Déise Óg. The boys played teams from all across the county and gave a great account of themselves.

U9

The U9’s were due to travel across the border to play Midleton in a hurling blitz last week. The bags were packed, the bus was booked and the boys were bulling to go but the heavy downpours on the prior night meant that the Midleton grounds were unplayable so we had to pull the plug. The boys will now switch to football for the remainder of the year, training Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.

U10

Our U10 hurlers represented the club in the annual Frank Meagher tournament, hosted by St. Mary’s of Clonmel. The lads had a fantastic day’s hurling playing teams from Tipperary, Cork, Wexford & Kildare. It was a very well run event, played in the spirit of the GAA Go Games. Well done boys!

U13

The division 1 county hurling semi-final, which had been refixed to Thursday 14th September, fell victim to the orange weather warning. The match was finally played on Saturday morning in a well turned out Kill pitch. The Abbeyside boys gave it their all but it wasn’t to be for them on the day. Ballygunner took an early lead into the wind in the first half and were able to keep edging away. Our lads started very well in the second half and competed tenaciously with their opponents from the city, but in the end Ballygunner progress to the county final with a scoreline of 3:16 to 1:04. Special mention must go to Darrach McGrath who was outstanding in goal for the Village. All of our U13 panel must be commended for the spirit and heart that our boys showed to the end, is testament to their character. There’s a bright future ahead for this group.

U15

Both our division 4 and division 2 hurling teams were in semi final action last week, playing An Gaeltacht and Micheal McCraith Tramore respectively. The division 4 match didn’t go our way but the attitude of our boys must be was admirable as they never gave up, even when playing against a team that surely would be able to compete comfortably a division or two higher. The U15 season comes to an end for the division 4 team now but they’ve done really well through the year and have shown impressive development.

Happily, the division 2 semi final went better for us. The lads beat Micheal McCraith Tramore with a scoreline of 2:12 to 0:12 and they now face Clan na Geal in a county final on Monday 25th September in Carriganore. It hasn’t been a straight forward path to the final for this panel and they’ve faced down a wide range of challenges, but they’ve always maintained their focus and have produced some fine performances. They are very deserving of their place in the county final and we wish them the best of luck! Please make the effort to go and support the boys, it makes a huge difference and it’s certain that Clan na Gael will have a big following.
