Abbeyside / Ballinacourty GAA Club has been recognised by the GAA authorities in Croke Park for its role in promoting positive physical and mental health among its members and the wider community. We have been designated a Healthy Club for 2019 - 2020. To achieve this our club had to engage in two initiatives that promoted these very important aspects of everyday life. Indeed, we undertook five programmes to ensure that our members and supporters were given the best opportunities to engage in an aspect of specific interest to themselves. The initiatives were as follows:-
- Club on the Move - This involved participants engaging in light physical activity in a fun environment twice a week for six weeks.
- Health and Wellbeing Talks - For players and mentors.
- Couch to 5K - Eight weeks training, in conjunction with Waterford Sports Partnership and West Waterford Athletic Club, before participating in the Brickey 5 km run.
- Guinness World Record - Juvenile boys and girls travelled to Croke Park and took part in the largest hurling training session ever organised.
- Smoke Free Grounds - Our club grounds are now smoke free. Signs indicating same have been erected at the clubhouse, ball alley and dugouts.
A huge thank you to Éamonn Cashin, the club's Health and Wellbeing Officer, who put trojan work into the programme and to all who contributed in any way to us achieving Healthy Club status for 2019 - 2020. We hope that everyone enjoyed the activities and look forward to being involved in others in the future.
