Under 20 Football

With our fixture versus St Patrick’s / Naomh Brid having fallen victim to Storm Jorge our 1st outing in this championship was against St Oliver’s in the club grounds last Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong side of a 2-08 to 0-12 score line and given the condensed nature of this championship we are now under pressure to progress. It’s knock football from here on and the lads know that nothing less than 100% application and commitment is necessary if we are to maintain an interest in this championship.

Senior Hurling

The Senior Hurlers commenced their competitive season last Friday night when taking on Lismore in the first round of the County League. On the night we came up short on a 0-15 to 0-13 score line. We go again this coming Friday when Tallow visit The Burgery, throw in 19.30, when hopefully we can get a positive result.

Intercounty

It’s another busy weekend upcoming on the intercounty front. On Saturday the footballers play host to London in Fraher Field whilst the hurlers, following a defeat to Limerick last Saturday, make the trip to Nowlan Park to face Kilkenny on Sunday afternoon. As ever we wish Brian, James, Conor and Neil all the best.

With the playing season commencing very shortly we ask all players to get their membership paid quickly. Also non playing members can pay their membership in the coming weeks. Membership can be paid to Kevin Tobin. Kevin will be in the field on Saturday morning between 10.30 and 11.30.

Jack the Joker.

Our ever-popular Jack the Joker fundraiser continues this Sunday night in O Connors Bar where the jackpot will be €2600 as on Sunday night Patrick Hurney was drawn out of the drum and chose card number 6 which when turned over was not the joker, but he did win €50. Denis Cosgrave & Jenny (Lady Belle) won €25.

Deise Draw 2020

The 2020 Deise Draw will commence on the last Wednesday (29th) of April and will continue each month until September. Hopefully we will see a good number getting involved and we get a winner or two during the year as the prizes on offer are fantastic.

Club Bingo

Our club bingo continues in the CBS Hall this Sunday night where the jackpot is €1400.

Sympathy

The parish of Abbeyside/Ballinroad/Garrnabane is the bedrock upon which our club is founded and from time to time we as a community endure tough and difficult times together. This was never more in evidence than over the course of the last week when we lost a number of persons who to varying degrees have had an association with CLG Dun Na Mainistreach/Baile Na Curite.

On behalf of all in the club, we would like to offer our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and parishioners of the late Fr. Connie Kelleher, P.P., Clonea Road, Abbeyside and Touraneena who died recently. Fr. Connie played for us for many years, winning a Minor Football County title in 1963 and the inaugural County U21 Hurling Championship in 1966. He always kept a keen eye on our club teams and those of parishes where he served and was a regular at club and inter-county games in Waterford and beyond.

On Saturday morning last we awoke to the dreadful news that John “Chopper” Organ had passed away following a brave fight with a terrible illness. Chopper was part of a fantastic underage team in “The Village” colours who won numerous Western and County titles during the 70’s culminating in a Minor double in 1976. This was followed up in 1979 with an U-21 football title. Of course, to people of a certain vintage, especially those of us from the more far flung reaches of the parish, Chopper will be remembered as the fella you called to get you home after a night of revelry. Many’s the game was dissected and team picked on those journeys, but through it all Chopper’s enduring love of his club shone through. He will be missed around Abbeyside. and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Also at this time we remember Ned Coleman, John Clarke and Josephine Regan who sadly passed on recently.

The thoughts and prayers of all in the club are with the family and friends of all those bereaved at this difficult time.
