County League Division 1 Champions

In Fraher Field last Saturday evening our Senior Footballer picked up the first silverware of the season when they defeated Rathgormack by 3 points (2-11 to 2-08) in a very keenly contested Division 1 final. Well done to all involved and attention now turns to preparing for championship which gets underway in a few weeks.

Mini All Ireland Hurling 2023

Sunday 11th June was a special day for our academy as the over 120 boys took part in our annual Mini All Ireland hurling festival. The event is split into two age ranges with U7’s & U8’s making up a group that played under the banners of Waterford, Tipperary, Galway, Offaly, Antrim & Dublin. The U9’s & U10’s represented Cork, Clare, Limerick, Kilkenny, Laois & Wexford. In the weeks leading up to the first round of matches, the team sheets were posted up in each of the primary schools in the parish and there was a clamour from the boys to see who’s on their team and what county they’ll be playing for! The school yard and training sessions were abuzz with excitement about who’ll mark who and what positions lads will play in – all very important to get right for match day!!!

Proceedings began with team the all-important photos before the traditional parading of the teams. The parade, which was lead by our friends the Popup Pipers, adds great pageantry to the day and places our young hurlers and the centre of proceedings and allows them to feel special and to share the occasion with their friends and team mates. The parade concluded on the main pitch with a fine rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann.

When the time came to take to the field the weather was kind to us and underfoot conditions were perfect for fast flowing hurling and there was plenty of that served up by our young hurlers. The games were played in line with the GAA Go Games model with a focus on inclusion and development for all the boys taking part. Each team played five matches and every boy played every minute of all the games and the quality of hurling was very impressive indeed with striking, blocking, hooking & catching amongst the many skills on display. A key part of making these days special for our young players is the massive support coming from family and friends. The sidelines were thronged and the cheering and encouragement definitely meant a lot to all the players.

When the final whistle sounded all the players descended on the clubhouse where they were presented with their medals and goodie bags which were well deserved. Days like this are important for our youngest players so that they can build happy memories of having fun and enjoyment with their friends. It wouldn’t have been possible to do any of this without the work and support of our academy coaches (along with a few U13 players too!) who all pulled together to help ensure that things run smoothly and that the day is as enjoyable as possible for the players. Keep an eye on social media for photos and videos.

U13

Our U13’s travelled down the coast to play Micheál McCraith Tramore in round two of the U13 hurling championship. The boys returned home with a victory under their belts and are now preparing for the next round, away to De la Salle, on Wednesday.

U9

On Saturday, our U8’s and U9’s travelled to the Big Smoke to play the mighty Mount Sion. The rain cleared as we arrived and the conditions were perfect for hurling. All of our teams battled hard and there was no little skill on show. They did the village proud. Thanks to all the parents who travelled, the lads really appreciate the support from the sidelines. Keep encouraging the boys to practice at home, the improvement is really showing

Junior Camogie

Our junior girls are training hard while they await their first championship game in August. Last Thursday night they took advantage of the lovely weather and location, and had a great session at the beach! Well done girls and keep up the great work!

They play a challenge game against Youghal this week - best of luck!
